DOCUMENT DESCRIPTION

Funded by Global Affairs Canada, the SAFEGRO project aims to enhance access to safe and competitive agri-food products for people in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, improving the well-being of consumers and other agri-food stakeholders. Implemented by Alinea International in partnership with the University of Guelph, the project addresses food safety as a significant public health concern.

In Vietnam, many consumers lack trust in food safety regulations at informal markets where they buy most of their food. Additionally, Vietnam’s commodity exports face challenges due to insufficient compliance with international standards.

The SAFEGRO project collaborates with national and municipal governments to strengthen food safety capacity among regulators, smallholder farmers, cooperatives, processors, retailers, and consumers along specific meat and vegetable value chains in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. SAFEGRO supports Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Industry and Trade in a coordinated effort to modernize food safety standards across the country.
